American economy and democracy sucks ass

Following a recent camping trip with my friends I recollect some ferocious arguments in the woods regarding the growth rates in the US and the Euro area. John being a fierce patriot, regurgitated the tired cliches about US being superior in GDP growth rates and unregulated markets to the Euro area, which have been long spun by the likes of Alan Greenspan and Milton Friedmann in their neo-liberal economic model whitewash pamphlets. Since I read The Economist, I could not but resist and verify such statements:

It turns out not only has the Euro area been growing stronger at 2% GDP growth predicted for 2008/20089 (growth rates) , while the US economy breathes heavily like a dead horse at 1% GDP growth. While we’re at it, the US unemployment has now surpassed that of the Netherlands, Britain, Denmark and Norway (The Economist, June 14 2008). All around me houses are getting fore-closured, people are loosing jobs and the country is getting bled by a crippling debt while the right wing propaganda is spewing the cultural imperialism nonsense about the cultural and economic supremacy of the United States. Americans can’t be even properly bothered to vote, having one of the lowest election turnouts (54 %) among the industrialized nations during congressional elections, (voter turnout and US voter turnout), lower than even Russia or India. When one looks at the sources cited above, the southerners vote even less than the Yankees at a pitiable rate hovering somewhere around 45%.
